The legal counsel will support the legal and commercial activities associated with the development and operation of Smart Charging’s EV charging network. The role focuses on advising on and managing site acquisition and infrastructure agreements, including progressing projects from initial Heads of Terms through to execution of leases, licences, and related commercial contracts.
Working closely with cross-functional teams such as Service, Operations, and Commercial, the Lawyer will provide practical legal guidance to facilitate the rollout of EV charging infrastructure while managing legal risk. The position will also support contract negotiation, regulatory compliance, and the development of scalable legal processes to maintain a consistent pipeline of sites and agreements required to support network growth.
The role will primarily support the UK Smart Charging business but may also provide legal support across the wider ITS UK & Ireland region where required.
This role is offered on a fixed term contract basis (approximately two days per week) with scope for the role to expand depending on business needs and the candidate’s experience.
KEY TASKS
Manage Legal Processes:
- Draft, review, and negotiate Heads of Terms, leases, licences, easements, and wayleave agreements for EV charging sites.
- Manage legal processes from initial agreement through to execution, ensuring timely completion of site agreements.
- Provide legal advice to internal teams on property, commercial, and infrastructure matters related to EV charge point deployment.
- Identify and manage legal risks associated with site acquisition and infrastructure agreements.
- Develop and maintain legal templates, processes, and documentation to support scalable network growth.
- Maintain accurate records and reporting of legal agreements and lease status.
- Coordinate with external counsel and counterparties to progress legal documentation and resolve issues.
- Support regulatory and contractual compliance relating to EV infrastructure projects.
Key Performance Indicators:
- Contract turnaround time, including drafting, review, and negotiation of site and commercial agreements
- Legal risk management, including identification and mitigation of material legal risks in property and commercial agreements.
- Accuracy and completeness of legal documentation and records, including maintenance of contract trackers and reporting.
- Stakeholder support, measured by responsiveness and effectiveness of legal advice to internal teams.
- Development and use of legal templates and processes to improve efficiency and consistency in site transactions.
- Compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements related to EV infrastructure and property agreements
What we are looking for
- Strong communication skills and proactive problem-solving
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Experience in commercial property law, especially in the energy/utilities sector
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
Education/Experience
• Qualified solicitor in England & Wales (or equivalent) • Experience advising on commercial contracts and infrastructure projects- preferably in house. • Experience dealing with public procurement frameworks or public sector contracts desirable • Experience in commercial property or infrastructure projects advantageous • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills • Ability to work independently and pragmatically with commercial teams • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
