Description

Your challenge

We are looking for an enthusiastic software developer to join our team to help support and deliver our industry-leading Traffic Management System (TMS).

  • The initial focus of this role is the development and improvement of our TMS product. This manages and controls traffic in many cities in the UK and abroad.
  • The core software is written in Pascal and C. TMS runs on clustered OpenVMS servers in our data centre. Some experience of OpenVMS and clustering is essential, although training and support will be provided.

Your profile

  • You should also be able to perform code reviews and provide helpful feedback to other team members. Experience with TCP, UDP, SNMP, HTTP and other standard protocols for data exchange would be helpful. Previous experience with traffic or other real-time systems is desirable but not essential.
  • The successful candidate will have a degree in Computer Science 2:1 or above, or equivalent qualifications or experience. Experience of working on collaborative software projects (either professionally, academically or as part of an open-source community) is helpful.
  • We are looking for a candidate with relevant experience and a willingness to learn more, an ability to tackle new problems without giving up, and who can work well within a small team.

As we are a small team, there is potential for you to branch out to work on different areas and, as you continue your career with SWARCO, the breadth of your work will naturally increase. Additional skills that would be useful in this regard are:

  • Angular
  • Java
  • Infrastructure tools, such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • MongoDB
  • PostgreSQL
  • Degree in computer science or equivalent qualifications / experience.
  • Significant experience designing, writing, and testing software in a structured programming language in a collaborative project environment.
  • Experience of the full software development life cycle.
  • Expertise with C#
  • Expertise with C and Pascal
  • Knowledge of Windows, Linux, and OpenVMS operating systems
  • Understanding of real-time software systems
  • Right to work and live in the UK

Your benefit

As well as providing a competitive salary and benefits package, we actively run employee opinion surveys as part of our drive to provide a comfortable and supportive working environment. We will support your development and you will also receive:

  • 25 days holiday rising to 28 days with bank holidays in addition, plus the option to buy agreed number of days
  • Perkbox – employee discount scheme with discounts online, in high street stores, cinema, holidays, restaurants and many more
  • Generous employer pension contributions
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Life assurance up to 4x salary
